Helmut Newton is one of the most famous and influential photographers of the 20th century, whose work forever changed the perception of fashion and erotic photography. His unique style, a combination of glamour, provocation and artistic excellence made his name synonymous with elite visual art.

Early years and the beginning of his career

Helmut Newton was born on 31 May 1920 in Berlin, Germany to a Jewish family. In his youth he showed an interest in art and photography, as well as classical music. In 1933, with the rise to power of the Nazis, Newton's family emigrated to Britain to escape persecution. There he continued his studies and began to take up photography.

In the post-war years, Newton moved to Paris, where he began working as a photojournalist and portrait photographer. His work attracted attention due to his unusual style - a combination of elegance and provocation.

Moving to the United States and becoming famous

In 1958, Newton moved to Los Angeles, where his career received a new impetus. He began working with leading fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. His photographs were characterised by a cinematic style, dramatic and often erotic motifs. Newton skilfully combined glamour with elements of surrealism and psychological depth.

Legendary works and legacy

In the 1960s and 1970s, Newton developed his signature style: dramatic compositions with strong light and shadow contrast, the use of unexpected angles and elements of surrealism. He often shot models in unusual poses or environments - creating a sense of theatre or cinematic scenes. His photographs were characterised by boldness of subject matter and high artistic value.

Key Projects and Recognition

During his career, Newton produced many iconic series: portraits of celebrities (Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot), series of nude women with weapons or objects of power, and experimental works with concepts of sexuality and power. His Sumo books (1980) have become iconic - a large-scale collection of his best work that has become one of the most expensive photobooks in the world.

Later years and legacy

Despite his successes, Newton remained true to his style - bold, provocative and artistically intense. He continued to work until the last years of his life - creating new series and exhibitions. His work had a huge influence on the development of erotic photography as an art form.
